PROJECTS IN PROGRESS…

The DPB Scandal: A Trangressive Queer Comedy

I’m revealing  further tales from my suburban family closet:

Lisa Haas’ transgressive comedy about good people with bad secrets exposes shocking revelations and twisted tales leaking from her kooky and cracked suburban family closet.

With an eagle eye for morbid minutiae and the amazing ability to find the dark humor in her family’s assembly of skeletons, Haas’ piece is an exploration/excavation of ghastly corruption, humiliation, shame, fear and loathing in 21st Century suburban America.

In The Denver Police Burglary Scandal, Haas revisits her family’s metaphorical burial ground, first seen in Crown Hill Cemetery. This time around she exhumes a powerful secret about her deceased father, which sheds new light on her own secret.

Minor in comparison to her biologically relevant revelations, Haas’ closeted homosexuality and internalized homophobia are the centerpiece of this shit-your-pants dystopian comedy.

Haas’ stories about her family and their misguided attempts to cover up everything from awkward situations to real family felonies reveal the incredibly high price she paid for maintaining her personal integrity in a family, and a society, where what other people think actually matters more than individual happiness.

At the 2008 Orlando Fringe, the Orlando Sentinel said about Crown Hill Cemetery, “Haas brings sincerity, creativity and humor to her tale… I’ve never seen anybody else convey grief quite as Haas does – This is a sweet, funny tale.” At the Piccolo Spoleto Festival The Post and Courier said, “Her vivacious, amazingly zingy off-the-wall material about death and dying came across hilariously.” And “…Haas is a comedian who shows a lot of promise as well as a bit of a Lily Tomlin quality. Saturday Night Live could use a comedian of this caliber.” The Charleston City Paper noted, “Haas delivers monologue with moxie…”
